Adequate Nutrition vs. Optimal Nutrition

Why take a multivitamin?

The Journal of the International Society of Sports Medicine states:

"The American Dietetic Association (ADA) has stated that the best nutritional strategy for promoting optimal health and reducing the risk of chronic disease is to wisely choose a wide variety of foods. Seventy diets were computer analyzed from the menu of athletes or sedentary subjects seeking to improve the quality of micronutrient intake from food choices. All of these dietary analyses fell short of the recommended 100% RDA micronutrient level from food alone. Therefore, based on diets analyzed for adequacy or inadequacy of macronutrients and micronutrients, a challenging question is proposed: "Does food selection alone provide 100% of the former RDA or newer RDI micronutrient recommended daily requirement?"

The answer to that last question, "does food alone provide 100% of the RDA (recommended daily amounts)... the answer time and time again is a resounding "no!"

According to the World Health Organization, vitamin A deficiency is the number one cause of preventable blindness, and having a deficiency increases your risk for disease and infection. The WHO also finds that a vitamin A deficiency is a problem in over half the nations in the world.

I have seen the research on how much food you would have to eat daily to meet the RDA requirements and it is upwards of 6,000 calories per day!!! We aren't talking McDonald's here, we are talking 6,000 calories of healthy vegetables and fruits, just to get the RDA which many scientists say is below optimal.

Heck, the RDA on vitamin D3 is 400iu but modern research points out that we may need up to 7,000iu per day. Clearly if we can't even meet the RDA which is set too low on many micronutrients then how can we have optimal health?

With the depleted soils of today modern day vegetables simply don't contain the amounts of nutrition they used to have.

While you may be getting enough micronutrients to keep from dying, that is a far cry from enough to be optimally healthy.

Clearly you can see how we need to supplement micronutrients (vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants) in order to be optimally healthy.

Are You Wasting Your Money on Vitamins

There are countless multivitamins on the market today, but how can you tell if you have a good one or a synthetic piece of junk draining your wallet?

The number one cause of a clogged septic tanks is guess what... Undigested multivitamins! YUCK. I actually mean you can still see the the brand stamped on the side of the pill!

This means there was virtually zero absorption of the pill. Regardless of whether the vitamins and minerals were synthetic or not (which means their bioavailability is limited) if they don't even dissolve then they are worthless.

A good quality multivitamin should dissolve in a glass of room temperature water in less than 30 minutes. Nutrilite's DoubleX multi will dissolve in 20 minutes or less.

Could Your Multivitamin Be Dangerous

There are roughly 2,000 supplement companies in the US and most of them are actually assembled in someone's basement, a hotel room or other non-FDA certified facility. Worse yet is that most supplements are made in cheap Chinese facilities, imported to the US and then in one of those basements a local company slaps their label on it.

If you are buying discounted vitamins at the major chains or drug stores it is highly doubtful that you are getting quality... let's just hope there is no Chinese melamine in there!

Another problem with multivitamins is that fact that some vitamins and minerals are fat soluble. That means we store them in our bodies in adipose tissue. In excessive amounts certain vitamins and minerals can be toxic! We all need optimal levels of vitamin A for the health of our eyes, skin, hair, etc. But did you know that too much vitamin A is bad for your eyes, skin, hair, etc.?

A high quality multivitamin will not provide high levels, if any levels, of vitamins or minerals that people tend to get plenty of and where high levels can be dangerous, iron for example. They will also use higher quality and typically non-synthetic versions of those nutrients.

Why Nutrilite

Nutrilite is made from primarily plant-based, organic materials. In fact a great deal of the fruits, vegetables and herbs that go into their multivitamins come from their own organic farms. Nutrilite carries the USDA Certified Organic seal for the produce that comes from their farms.

Nutrilite is also NSF Certified for Sport which indicates that these products do not contain banned substances (nothing illegal for competitive athletes and no low quality junk either) and that all label contents and claims have been verified... that mean's what is on the label is in the pill! That means you can trust the quality. Most supplements on the market you have no idea if what you are paying for is actually what you are getting but with Nutrilite you can rest assured that you are getting the highest quality.

Some of the plants that go into Nutrilite's multis are:

  • Kale
  • Holy Basil
  • Cranberry
  • Prune
  • Rosemary
  • Broccoli
  • Watercress
  • Parsley
  • Pomegranate
  • Sage
  • Horseradish root
  • Alfalfa
  • Grapefruit, Orange and Lemon = vitamin C
  • Apple
  • Asparagus
  • Blueberry
  • Oregano
  • Grape skin and seed
  • Marigold
  • Tomato
  • Acerola cherries
  • and more

Asafa Powell

They are Kosher and Halal-certified. In addition to vitamins and minerals they also provide plant-based phytonutrients and antioxidants. Phytonutrients are plant chemicals known to prevent certain diseases, reverse aging and provide many other health benefits. Antioxidants of course clear our bodies of oxidative free-radicals which cause cancer.

Former fastest man in the world, Jamaican Asafa Powell, says that DoubleX helped him set the world record of 9.77 seconds in the 100 meter sprint and then shortly thereafter break that record with a 9.74.

According to Powell, he had plateaued in his training and then his brother told him to take DoubleX. Asafa said that he felt like he recovered from his training sessions faster which allowed him to train harder and thus run faster.

Clearly DoubleX won't turn you into the fastest sprinter in the world but if it can help you recover from your training sessions faster then it can help push you further in your progress.

3 Multi Options

Nutrilite offers several options for daily multivitamins, I have my 3 top picks listed below. You can search the others by clicking any of the links and looking around.

The Flagship DoubleX

DoubleX is the Cadillac of multivitamin/mineral/phytonutrients. There are 3 pills each containing a different micronutrient component. DoubleX is strong stuff as it contains so many plant concentrates; I recommend taking it with just a little bit of food or beverage or you may feel queasy. Ever had fruit on an empty stomach and gotten queasy? Well, it is like that.

Another cool thing about DoubleX is that you can collect the proof of purchases off of the box, collect 10 of them and you get a free box.

Nutrilite Daily

Look, DoubleX isn't cheap, it is the Cadillac of multis. If you are on a budget and just can't spend the dough on DoubleX then Daily is the multi for you.

Nutrilite Daily-Free

Free of yeast, wheat, alfalfa, iron, and vitamin K. People with sensitivities can still get 100% or more of the Daily Value for 12 essential vitamins and 7 minerals with this unique multi.
